Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter Into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity

product image
$15.00

In this revised and expanded paperback of his groundbreaking book, Jesuit priest and New York Times bestselling author James Martin makes the surprisingly controversial argument that Catholic leaders should stop seeing the LGBT community as "the other" and instead reach out to them with greater compassion and openness.

This new edition includes a new introduction along with forty percent new material, including stories from LGBT Catholics, and responses to the common questions about ministry to LGBT people. Father Martin turns to three virtues from the Catechism of the Catholic Church--"respect, compassion, and sensitivity"--as a model for how both the Catholic leadership and LGBT Catholics can move together on a "two-way bridge" toward reconciliation and love.

This revolutionary book also includes spiritual and biblical resources for the LGBT community and their families, friends, and allies. Father Martin offers biblical passages, accompanied by meditations and questions for reflection, to help LGBT people find their place in the church and enter into a deeper relationship with God. Building a Bridge is a compassionate book desperately needed in today's climate of divisiveness.

Catholic Enlightenment: The Forgotten History of a Global Movement

Catholic Enlightenment: The Forgotten History of a Global Movement
$22.00
"Whoever needs an act of faith to elucidate an event that can be explained by reason is a fool, and unworthy of reasonable thought." This line, spoken by the notorious 18th-century libertine Giacomo Casanova, illustrates a deeply entrenched perception of religion, as prevalent today as it was hundreds of years ago. It is the sentiment behind the narrative that Catholic beliefs were incompatible with the Enlightenment ideals. Catholics, many claim, are superstitious and traditional, opposed to democracy and gender equality, and hostile to science. It may come as a surprise, then, to learn that Casanova himself was a Catholic. In The Catholic Enlightenment, Ulrich L. Lehner points to such figures as representatives of a long-overlooked thread of a reform-minded Catholicism, which engaged Enlightenment ideals with as much fervor and intellectual gravity as anyone. Their story opens new pathways for understanding how faith and modernity can interact in our own time.

Lehner begins two hundred years before the Enlightenment, when the Protestant Reformation destroyed the hegemony Catholicism had enjoyed for centuries. During this time the Catholic Church instituted several reforms, such as better education for pastors, more liberal ideas about the roles of women, and an emphasis on human freedom as a critical feature of theology. These actions formed the foundation of the Enlightenment's belief in individual freedom. While giants like Spinoza, Locke, and Voltaire became some of the most influential voices of the time, Catholic Enlighteners were right alongside them. They denounced fanaticism, superstition, and prejudice as irreconcilable with the Enlightenment agenda.

In 1789, the French Revolution dealt a devastating blow to their cause, disillusioning many Catholics against the idea of modernization. Popes accumulated ever more power and the Catholic Enlightenment was snuffed out. It was not until the Second Vatican Council in 1962 that questions of Catholicism's compatibility with modernity would be broached again.

Ulrich L. Lehner tells, for the first time, the forgotten story of these reform-minded Catholics. As Pope Francis pushes the boundaries of Catholicism even further, and Catholics once again grapple with these questions, this book will prove to be required reading.

Catholic Modern: The Challenge of Totalitarianism and the Remaking of the Church

Catholic Modern: The Challenge of Totalitarianism and the Remaking of the Church
$35.00

In 1900 the Catholic Church stood staunchly against human rights, religious freedom, and the secular state. According to the Catholic view, modern concepts like these, unleashed by the French Revolution, had been a disaster. Yet by the 1960s, those positions were reversed. How did this happen? Why, and when, did the world's largest religious organization become modern?

James Chappel finds an answer in the shattering experiences of the 1930s. Faced with the rise of Nazism and Communism, European Catholics scrambled to rethink their Church and their faith. Simple opposition to modernity was no longer an option. The question was how to be modern. These were life and death questions, as Catholics struggled to keep Church doors open without compromising their core values. Although many Catholics collaborated with fascism, a few collaborated with Communists in the Resistance. Both strategies required novel approaches to race, sex, the family, the economy, and the state.

Catholic Modern tells the story of how these radical ideas emerged in the 1930s and exercised enormous influence after World War II. Most remarkably, a group of modern Catholics planned and led a new political movement called Christian Democracy, which transformed European culture, social policy, and integration. Others emerged as left-wing dissidents, while yet others began to organize around issues of abortion and gay marriage. Catholics had come to accept modernity, but they still disagreed over its proper form. The debates on this question have shaped Europe's recent past--and will shape its future.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL THOUGHT

CATHOLIC SOCIAL THOUGHT
$1.00
From its earliest origins, the Catholic church has tried to influence society and society has, to varying degrees, shaped the church. Recently, with the demise of the Marxist alternative to capitalism, Catholic social teaching has assumed the role of the major international force challenging free enterprise to be more humane. What does the church have to say about the world's current situation and the possibility of a new world order, and how has this message evolved over the past 100 years? The 20 essays in Catholic Social Thought and the New World Order reflect on the development and evolution of Catholic social teaching and analyse its practical applications for the contemporary world.

Catholic Theology

product image
$23.00

Rowland showcases here the dominant contemporary approaches to doing Catholic theology. Chapter 1 offers a summary of the two International Theological Commission (ITC) documents on the discipline of Catholic theology. These documents set out the general principles which should govern any approach to Catholic theology (at least according to the ITC). The subsequent chapters each focus on one of four different approaches frequently found in contemporary Catholic academies: the approach of Thomists, members of the Communio milieu, members of the Concilium milieu and promoters of different varieties of Liberation Theology.
Rowland's work is pitched at the level of first time students of theology who are trying to make sense of the methodological choices which undergird the different approaches to Catholic theology.
Rowland concludes with four appendices: a list of all Doctors of the Church, a list of all encyclicals since the 19th century, a list of the documents of the Second Vatican Council, and a list of definitions of the various Christological heresies which were the subject of the debates of the early Church Councils.
These appendices will provide useful reference tables for young scholars, including seminarians.

CATHOLIC WORKER AFTER DOROTHY: PRACTICING THE WORKS OF MERCY IN A NEW GENERATION

CATHOLIC WORKER AFTER DOROTHY: PRACTICING THE WORKS OF MERCY IN A NEW GENERATION
$19.95
When Dorothy Day died in 1980, many people assumed that the movement she had founded would gradually fade away. But the current state of the Catholic Worker movement--more than two hundred active communities--reflects Day's fierce attention to the present moment and the local community. These communities have prospered, according to Dan McKanan, because Day and Maurin provided them with a blueprint that emphasized creativity more than rigid adherence to a single model. Day wanted Catholic Worker communities to be free to shape their identities around the local needs and distinct vocations of their members. Open to single people and families, in urban and rural areas, the Catholic Worker and its core mission have proven to be both resilient and flexible. The Catholic Worker after Dorothy explores the reality of Catholic Worker communities today. What holds them together? How have they developed to incorporate families? How do Catholic Workers relate to the institutional church and to other radical communities? What impact does the movement have on the world today?

COMMUNION OF IMMIGRANTS: A HISTORY OF CA THOLICS IN AMERICA

COMMUNION OF IMMIGRANTS: A HISTORY OF CA THOLICS IN AMERICA
$9.95
Catholicism has grown from a suppressed and persecuted outsiders' religion in the American colonies to become the nation's single largest denomination. James Fisher surveys more than four centuries of Catholics' involvement in American history, starting his narrative with one of the first Spanish expeditions to Florida, in 1528. He follows the transformation of Catholicism into one of America's most culturally and ethnically diverse religions, including the English Catholics' early settlement in Maryland, the Spanish missions to the Native Americans, the Irish and German poor who came in search of work and farmland, the proliferation of Polish and Italian communities, and the growing influx of Catholics from Latin America. The book discusses Catholic involvement in politics and conflict, from New York's Tammany Hall to the Vietnam War and abortion. Fisher highlights the critical role of women in American Catholicism--from St. Elizabeth Seton and Dorothy Day to Mother Cabrini, the first American citizen to be canonized a saint--and describes the influence of prominent American Catholics such as Cardinal John J. O'Connor, 1930s radio personality Father Charles Coughlin, President John F. Kennedy, pacifists Daniel and Philip Berrigan, activist Cesar Chavez, and author Flannery O'Connor.

Covenant and Communion

Covenant and Communion
$21.99
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger's election as Pope Benedict XVI brought a world-class biblical theologian to the papacy. There is an intensely biblical quality to his pastoral teaching and he has demonstrated a keen concern for the authentic interpretation of sacred Scripture.

Here a foremost interpreter of Catholic thought and life offers a probing look at Benedict's biblical theology and provides a clear and concise introduction to his life and work. Bestselling author and theologian Scott Hahn argues that the heart of Benedict's theology is salvation history and the Bible and shows how Benedict accepts historical criticism but recognizes its limits. The author also explains how Benedict reads the overall narrative of Scripture and how he puts it to work in theology, liturgy, and Christian discipleship.

CREATIVE FIDELITY

CREATIVE FIDELITY
$30.00
Finding themselves in a Protestant nation with little interest and less respect for Catholic habits of mind, often the sons and daughters of immigrants who had no training in the intellectual life of their native cultures, Catholics found themselves challenged to show one could be both Catholic and American. The result was one that Appleby, Byrne, and Portier see as a work of creative fidelity. In this book, the editors offer the reader a chance to see what Catholics from the earliest days to the present grappled with that task. In the process, we gain insight into such questions as, Is there or even ought there be a distinctively Catholic intellectual style? How can Catholics best bring their insights into the nature and shape of the common weal into the public forum to influence debates? Some texts will seem quaint. Others, though, take on immense relevance as one comes to understand the relative poverty of secular ethics in coming to grips with many of the truly great issues that matter most to how a nation ought to live its life. Texts from figures as different as Thomas Merton and John Carroll, Orestes Brownson and John Courtney Murray illuminate the landscape of American Catholic intellectual life. This book is absolutely important for college courses on Catholic life and history, but it will also be fascinating reading for the general reader who wants to understand how the Catholic people made themselves a richly furnished intellectual home in an often hostile land.

CULTURAL WORLD OF THE APOSTLES: YR A

CULTURAL WORLD OF THE APOSTLES: YR A
$11.95

Preachers and liturgy planners will find The Cultural World of the Apostles a complementary companion to Pilch & Acirc's previous series The Cultural World of Jesus. Each essay offers brief historical and literary information on the New Testament reading assigned for the Sundays in the three-year Lectionary cycle. Suggestions for cross-cultural comparisons with Western culture and links with the gospel for each Sunday encourage readers to explore pastoral applications to modern life.

The principle that guided the architects of the Lectionary in selecting the second readings in the Sunday Lectionary was that the readings should be short and easily understood. The second readings were intended to be an independent, semi-continuous reading of the letters attributed to Paul and James, with selections from Peter and Revelation. Pilch explains that, because the readings were shortened, their brevity has deprived readers of sufficient context to interpret the text-segment in a responsible way. To help people make sense of such high-context documents, Pilch provides in The Cultural World of the Apostles a broader literary context for each reading.

Did the Anglicans and Roman Catholics Agree on the Eucharist?

product image
$27.00

Fifty-two years ago [in 1966] Archbishop Michael Ramsey of Canterbury visited Rome and agreed with the Pope to inaugurate an Anglican-Roman Catholic theological dialogue. Three phases of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) resulted and continue to this day. ARCIC I agreed on a statement on Eucharistic Doctrine in 1971 and an Elucidation of it in 1979. The Vatican declined full endorsement of these, and in 1994 ARCIC II produced Clarifications of them, which the Vatican accepted as sufficient. Colin Buchanan, who himself published the 1971 Statement in England, has followed the international dialogue closely since 1971. He here prints all the relevant texts and examines in detail the attempted reconciling of traditional Roman Catholic eucharistic belief and Anglican reformed doctrine. His study includes Apostolicae curae and Malines, and in the modern era follows public and synodical debate, and the question of "reception." Three unprecedented unique features are: first, a diachronic study of the one doctrine; second, a fair regard for reformed Anglican beliefs; and third, a relating of dogmatic theology to eucharistic liturgy. The history prompts the question that forms the book's title, and close following of that history also provides the answer.

"A fascinating and detailed account of the work of ARCIC and the response of the two Communions in search of an answer to the question of whether Anglicans and Roman Catholics agree on the Eucharist. Even if some may not entirely agree with all of the use of the evidence, Bishop Colin's reflections will help us reconsider and perhaps refine the processes of response to, and reception of, the results of ecumenical dialogue."
--Dame Mary Tanner, European President of the WCC from 2006 to 2013

"Bishop Colin Buchanan's historical and theological study concentrates on one of the themes that was dealt with by the Anglican Roman-Catholic International Commission (ARCIC): the Eucharist . . . His careful analysis of all relevant documents leads to the conclusion that there is no substantial agreement on the eucharist between the two Communions . . . His arguments will certainly challenge ecumenists and theologians because they put the common opinion into question that ARCIC has reached a substantial agreement on the Eucharist."
--Adelbert Denaux, member of ARCIC II 1993-2004 and of ARCIC III 2011-17, and joint-author of the Final Report of ARCIC II

"Colin Buchanan gives a timely review of the ARCIC agreed statements on the Eucharist, and reveals the many disagreements that have been missed or ignored. Both Roman Catholic and Anglican theologians will need to ponder his arguments and conclusions."
--Bryan D. Spinks, Yale Institute of Sacred Music and Yale Divinity School

Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue: Unitatis Redintegratio, Nostra Aetate

Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue: Unitatis Redintegratio, Nostra Aetate
$18.95
In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Vatican II, Paulist Press has created a groundbreaking 8-book series, Rediscovering Vatican II, that places the Council in dialogue with today's church and her people and focuses on what today's Catholics need to know, not just historically. The first volume, Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue: Unitatis Redintegratio, Nostra Aetate, looks at the relationship of the Catholic Church with other Christian churches and other great religions. Cardinal Cassidy devotes part one of his book to Unitatis Redintegratio, the decree on Restoring Christian Unity, which brought the Catholic Church into the modern ecumenical movement. And in part two, Nostra Aetate (the Declaration on Interreligious Dialogue), he looks at the relationship of the Catholic Church with other world religions. This work, and indeed the entire series, which is the only one of its kind at this level and organization, will prove valuable for religious educators, theologians, church historians (of all faiths, especially Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), undergraduate and graduate students, as well as readers who have heard much about Vatican II, but who have never sat down to understand certain aspects of it. +

Everyone Leads: How to Revitalize the Catholic Church

Everyone Leads: How to Revitalize the Catholic Church
$25.00
Drawing on decades of leadership experience, bestselling author Chris Lowney examines the profound challenges facing the global Catholic Church, shares real-life stories of Catholics making a difference, and offers practical suggestions for change. The Catholic Church is suffering its worst decline in five centuries--a precipitous slide that will turn catastrophic unless reversed by fundamental changes in strategy, culture, and leadership style. Even the inspiring leadership of Pope Francis will not reverse the slide without a strategy for action, from the grassroots through the hierarchy. Chris Lowney, a former Jesuit seminarian and business executive who now chairs one of the world's largest Catholic ministries, not only outlines the challenges but also maps the path forward in Everyone Leads. After a bracing review of the church's global struggles--from clergy shortages to declining participation--Lowney draws on two decades of change-management experience to propose an "EASTeR" strategy of five transformational principles: be entrepreneurial, be accountable, serve, transform, and reach out. These five ideas can catalyze profound change in every parish, in how bishops think, and in the roles laypeople play in leading the church. Filled with real-life examples, Everyone Leads outlines strategies that anyone can employ--from the pews to the pulpit--to strengthen the church. As a former business executive who lectures globally about leadership, Lowney speaks credibly about the institution's challenges and potential. And, as chair of one of Catholicism's largest hospital systems, he writes "from within" as a Catholic who loves his church and is committed to seeing it flourish.

Finding the Voice of the Church

Finding the Voice of the Church
$25.00
Finding the Voice of the Church is written for a broad audience interested in the challenges facing the contemporary Catholic Church. These challenges are ones that should concern all Christians, not only Catholics. Noted scholar and commentator George Dennis O'Brien poses (and answers) three provocative questions: What is the proper voice of the church? Is there a voice of Christian faith? Can what is said about Christianity be fundamentally distorted by how it is said? Through his clear and relevant discussion of the basic content of Christianity, O'Brien concludes that the primary voice of Catholic Christianity, the papal teaching voice, must be radically "re-understood" if the Church is to be the proper medium and voice of the gospel message. O'Brien begins with the primary voice of the Church: baptism, gospel, and Eucharist. He contends that too much official teaching from the Roman magisterium to the local pulpit reverses the order of the ancient formula lex orandi, lex credendi (the law of prayer is the law of faith) and therefore misses its message. In the second part of the book, he turns to specific consideration of the papal voice as the teaching voice of the Church. O'Brien concludes with a series of practical suggestions for how the practices and institutions of the Church can again become the authentic voice of faith. This is a book all concerned Christians will want to read and discuss.
